Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon Brothers Zeus, lord of the skies is a charming and paternal god with an enormous inflated ego. He is clever, dazzling and has a great power of leadership. He presides over kingship and oversees the sky, lightning and thunder. He also commands the ocean, earthquakes, and metals. His brother Hades is the lord of the underworld. How did they become Gods? The Greeks have created an elaborate mythology that was a blend of the early Greek culture as well as pre-Greek Mediterranean beliefs and other cultures they intermingled with as they conquered and spread across their territories. This was especially true when it came to their gods. Zeus, Poseidon and Hades were often depicted with very similar personalities, stories, and depictions. This could be due to the conventions of art or the fact that the brothers were close or the diverse stories being told in different regions. The first of the Olympians to overthrow their father Cronus was Zeus. Believing that one of his children would succeed him, Cronus swallowed Zeus' sisters and brothers at birth. Cronus his wife Rhea managed to escape the womb to save her son. Zeus was therefore the only child to survive. When the Titans were defeated, Zeus and his brothers split power between them. Zeus reigned over the skies, while his brother Poseidon controlled the seas. Hades was born into the worst of all his siblings, and he became the ruler of the Underworld. Hades is typically depicted as a ghastly, grim figure that inspires terror and awe in everyone who encounter him. Cerberus is often depicted alongside him, the three-headed dog that guards his realm. He also wears a headgear known as the Helm of Darkness, and his weapon is the bident, which is akin to Poseidon's trident. The underworld was viewed by the ancient Greeks as an ethereal realm, not an unholy place. Hades was charged with guarding the souls of mortals and women who passed away in order to ensure that divine justice was done for their lives. He also is charged with creating life, and providing rain to those who require it. Zeus is king of heavens and is the leader of the Olympian Gods. He is often depicted with a beard and a tridents in his hand. He is a powerful and imposing god with an ebony skin tone. His beard and hair are light brown and he wears loose robes that show off his muscular body. He prefers the trident and also carries lightning bolts. What do they have to do with them? While they share some similar qualities, Zeus and Poseidon are very different from each other. Each has their own powers and strengths that allow them to fulfill their roles within the pantheon. Zeus is the king of Gods and rules over the sky. Poseidon controls the ocean, and Hades governs the underworld. Both brothers are able to slash their adversaries with lightning and thunder. They also both can alter their appearance. This lets them communicate with mortals on a more human level. They can also manage weather conditions and are extremely powerful at sea. Hades, the Greek god of the underworld, is a dark and foreboding character. He isn't as welcoming or polite as Zeus and Poseidon, and is also notorious for his moody behavior. Hades is responsible for punishing the dead. However He does it with compassion and fairness. Hades is the god of protection for all things related to water. In artwork Hades is often depicted with his trident, as well as Cerberus the three-headed guard dog of the Underworld. Like his brother, he's very strong and can shake the earth with his trident. He can also create powerful storms that can engulf vessels immediately. He is the patron god of the sea and of horses. He is a dangerous god and his anger can be easily caused. The most well-known tale about the pair is their romance with Persephone. She was the daughter of Demeter and Zeus and was taken by Hades to marry him. Hades was enthralled by her despite her initially reluctance. This caused him to make a deal with her that he would allow her to return to his underworld home as long as she spent just a little of the year with him. Persephone was reluctant to leave her earthly life and return to the realm of her father. She eventually agreed to the terms. This is the reason it was one of the few times that Hades moved above the ground. How do they interact? Zeus and Poseidon are two of the most powerful gods in mythology. They are the sons of Titan King Cronus and his wife Rhea, and they took over their fathers and became the supreme rulers of Olympus. In certain myths, Hades appears to admire and lust after the power Zeus has. But in others, he behaves cynically toward his brother. He also shows false condolences for his brother's abduction of Persephone which reveals that he's really not worried about the girl's disappearance. Poseidon is the King of the Seas and earthquakes, therefore Poseidon is able to trigger tsunamis, storm surges, and earthquakes. He is typically depicted holding a trident to show his power. He is also the king of horses and has the ability to take control of any animal in his domain. This includes land and sea creatures. He is also the god of the underworld, so he has the power to summon souls and exile them from the realm of Earth. He is often depicted with Cerberus, his three-headed dog on his side. He is also the keeper the throne for the dead. This means he has the power to determine the fate of souls, and remit them either to heaven or hell. What is the nature of their relationship? Zeus, Hades and Poseidon were the children of Titan King Cronus and his wife Queen Rhea. They overthrew their father in the Titanomachy and then created a lottery to determine who would rule which realms. Hades was granted the Underworld, Zeus received the heavens and the sky and Poseidon became god of the sea. Each of them ruled vast domains that were greater than anything any god could ever hope to achieve. They were clever and savvy leaders who were proud in their power. They were also jealous. Zeus was jealous of his brother's affection for Hera. He wanted Hera for himself. To take her away the girl, he kidnapped her and took her to the Underworld. He made her drink the potion while she was there. This resulted in her becoming to become a Hebe and she was unable to go back to Demeter until after she had a second child. This led to Persephone spending two-thirds of the year with Demeter and the other third with Hades. The same thing happened to the seasons. During her time spent with Demeter she began to neglect her duties as goddess of fertility. This caused her to be angry with Hades. He decided to get her back. He tricked her into changing into a dirty cuckoo. Being aware that she was a lover of animals, he placed her bird close to her chest, and she fell in amour. He then returned to his initial form and married her. After the wedding, Hades was a loving husband and father to their three children. However, he was still uncertain about his position on Mount Olympus. He wanted to be the center for the change. He proposed to the gods that he bring hell to the planet. They debated for days before eventually came to an agreement. While Hestia is an eminent goddess of peace, her job is to keep the other Olympians in control. She is also the patron goddess of marriage and takes particular care of married women. She was a very religious lady however she did have some relationships with Zeus who was the husband of her sister. She had children with mortals and nymphs, including Triton, Theseus, Orion, and Pegasus.
